Causes of poor VoIP call quality and how to avoid them

VoIP is one of the most efficient ways to deliver calls over the internet, resulting in lower communication costs and increased integration for businesses. VoIP phone systems often rely on various variables such as call packages and bandwidth, and a failure to get them right can lead to faulty connections. If you experience poor call quality, these are not the only variables that you should be on the look-out for. Below are more factors that you should keep in mind and ways to rectify them.

Network connections

VoIP phone systems can only work if call set up times, rates and network load are configured to suit your business needs. If your VoIP shares network between voice and data, then your call quality will reduce significantly. Priorities your voice packets over those of voice data to ensure that not only your office-based employees benefit but also those working from home. If you need to perform any updates for your cloud phone systems, do this during night hours when your internet connections are not in use.

Jitter cycles

If you make a VoIP call to any client or employee, your voice is first broken down into packets, which are then sent to the receiver. Proper communication dictates that the receiver should get the packets in the same order that they are compressed, failure to which distorted communication occurs in your business phones systems. If you experience this problem, request your phone systems provider to use jitter buffers to store the voice packets temporarily to ensure they get to the receiver in the correct order.

Outdated routers

You may have recently installed VoIP phone systems in your office but forgot one crucial aspect, updating your routers for your hosted pbx. If your router does not have the necessary applications to priorities VoIP call pockets, then you will experience poor call quality. Switch to a VoIP router to ensure that both your business phones systems and home office phones systems get the best of VoIP service.
