Across the UK, community pharmacies are under more pressure than ever. Rising patient demand, growing prescription volumes and stretched teams mean the phones rarely stop ringing, and every missed call is a patient left waiting.

At The VoIP Shop, we have spent the past year helping hundreds of pharmacies tackle that challenge head-on, moving them from outdated, unreliable phone lines to modern cloud-based communications, connecting them with fast and dependable Full Fibre broadband, and enriching the way they work with powerful AI features to provide a phone system for pharmacies that is fit for purpose and is designed specifically for pharmacies

A mission that started at the Pharmacy Show

Our journey with many of these pharmacies began at the Pharmacy Show back in 2025, where our team spent the event talking to pharmacists, dispensary managers and PCN leads about the everyday communication challenges holding their teams back. The same themes came up again and again: too many calls, not enough time, ageing phone systems on the brink of the analogue switch-off, and connectivity that simply could not keep up with modern clinical software, card payments and video consultations.

Those conversations shaped everything we have done since. We set out to give pharmacies a genuinely joined-up solution: a reliable phone system, rock-solid broadband, and intelligent AI tools, all from a single trusted partner who understands the pharmacy sector inside out.

Moving pharmacies to the cloud

At the heart of the transformation is our cloud-based phone system, built specifically for the way pharmacies work. By replacing old, hardware-dependent phone lines with a fully cloud-hosted platform, we have given pharmacy teams the freedom to make and take calls from the dispensary, the consultation room, a second branch or even from home, all on the same professional number

Features such as professional call queuing with real-time position updates, intelligent call routing and encrypted call recording have helped pharmacies handle their busiest periods far more calmly.

With the traditional PSTN network being switched off, moving to the cloud has future-proofed these pharmacies well ahead of the deadline, removing the risk of last-minute disruption to a service their patients depend on.

Faster, more reliable connectivity

A great phone system needs a great connection behind it. That is why so many of the pharmacies we work with have also upgraded to our business-grade Full Fibre broadband. Delivering a pure fibre-optic connection straight to the premises, it keeps phone calls, dispensing systems, card payments and consultations running smoothly, even at the busiest times of day.

Because we provide both the broadband and the phone system, we configure the two to work together perfectly, prioritising voice traffic so calls stay crystal clear and never break up. For pharmacies that cannot afford to be offline, it has been a genuine game-changer.

Enriching pharmacies with productivity enhancing AI Powered Features:

What has excited our customers most, however, is the AI. Our cloud platform brings intelligent features that were once the preserve of large contact centres directly into the everyday pharmacy.

AI Call Summary produces a clear written overview of every call the moment it ends, so nothing is forgotten and follow-ups are never missed. Live Call Transcription turns every conversation into accurate, searchable text in real time, capturing medication names, dates of birth and patient details precisely. Together, these tools have saved pharmacy teams hours every week, freeing staff from note-taking and admin so they can focus on dispensing and patient care

The AI Receptionist: never miss a patient again

For a great many of the pharmacies we support, the standout addition has been our AI Receptionist. This always-on, intelligent assistant answers calls automatically, understands what each patient needs, and captures their details, working around the clock so no call goes unanswered.

Pharmacies are using it in particular to handle overflow and out-of-hours calls, the moments when the team is simply too busy to reach the phone, or when the doors have closed for the day. Instead of an engaged tone or an endless ring, patients are greeted professionally, their requests are captured, and the pharmacy team picks up seamlessly when they are ready. Missed calls have fallen to zero, patient wait times have shrunk, and teams finally have room to breathe during their busiest hours.
