Sales Director, The VoIP Shop  ·  In UK telecoms since 2011

Kully Hothi

Kully Hothi is Sales Director at The VoIP Shop and one of the company’s lead authors. He has worked in UK telecoms since 2011, helping businesses get off ageing phone lines and onto communication systems that suit how they actually work. He also writes the guides, reports and explainers that help business owners make sense of VoIP, cloud telephony, connectivity and the PSTN switch-off.

Across his career he has worked with over 5,000 businesses and migrated more than 30,000 users onto modern phone systems, from two-person startups to multi-site organisations with hundreds of extensions. Two things he insists on every time: the migration happens without downtime, and the business is not left paying more than it needs to.

“Nobody should need a technical background to buy a phone system. You know your business. I’ll handle the technical bit.”

Background

Fifteen years, learned from both sides of the industry

Kully started in telecoms at Vodafone in 2011 as a sales specialist, learning the industry from the inside at one of the UK’s largest networks. He then moved into the managed service world as a Sales Manager and Business Development Manager for an MSP, selling the full stack: VoIP, IT, mobile SIMs, and residential telecoms and broadband, across a wide range of platforms and infrastructure.

That mix matters. It means he is not tied to one vendor’s way of doing things. He has sold, deployed and supported enough different systems to know which one actually fits a given business, and which ones only look good on a brochure.

He joined The VoIP Shop as Sales Director and has led the sales team since 2024.

Qualifications and certifications

Certified across every major UK network and platform

Kully is sales certified across all four major UK mobile networks as well as Openreach, which is why he can look at a business’s phones, mobiles and connectivity together rather than treating them as three separate problems.

What Kully helps with

Five things he is asked about most

The PSTN and ISDN switch-off

Openreach is retiring the old copper network on 31 January 2027, and every UK business still on analogue or ISDN lines has to move. Kully has taken thousands of businesses through that migration, porting numbers, replacing handsets and cutting over without downtime.

Choosing the right system, not the biggest one

Whether it is a 2 to 10 user setup, a 20 or 50 user office, or a 100 to 200+ user multi-site operation, the right answer changes completely. Kully’s job is to work out which VoIP phone system fits, then price it honestly.

Connectivity as well as calls

A phone system is only as good as the line behind it, so Kully looks at the whole picture: FTTP, leased lines, 5G connectivity and IoT SIMs across Openreach and every major alternative network.

AI where it earns its place

He works increasingly with AI-powered phone systems, AI receptionists and CRM integrations, always deployed to solve a real problem such as unanswered calls or admin overload, rather than for the sake of it.

Cutting through the jargon

Straight answers over sales pressure. Kully is also vocal about the sharp practice in this industry, including the long-term telecom lease agreements that quietly lock small businesses into paying many times over the odds for their handsets.

Sectors and platforms

Where he works, and what he works with

Healthcare

GP practices, pharmacies, dental groups and clinics, where call answering is a patient access issue, not just an admin one.

Education

Schools, academies and trusts, including absence lines, safeguarding and multi-site trust rollouts.

Finance

Where call recording, compliance and reliability are non-negotiable.

SMEs of every size

Single-site and multi-site, from two people to a few hundred extensions. See phone systems for small business.

The most common mistake I see is a business buying a phone system based on the monthly price and nothing else.

The telecoms industry also has a reputation problem, and it’s earned. Too many businesses have been talked into five to seven year leases for handsets worth a fraction of what they end up paying. I’d rather lose a sale than put someone in that position. You only get recommended once.

The switch-off isn’t something to be scared of, but it is something to plan. Nobody should need a technical background to buy a phone system. You know your business. I’ll handle the technical bit.”
