Can VoIP Numbers Be Used Internationally?

Yes. VoIP numbers can be used internationally, allowing businesses to have local phone numbers in multiple countries while making and receiving calls from anywhere with an internet connection. This helps businesses establish a local presence, improve customer trust, and support international teams without opening physical offices overseas.

How Does International VoIP Work?

Because VoIP calls travel over the internet rather than through local telephone lines, a business can be issued a number with a foreign area code, for example, a UK company holding a US or Australian number, and route calls from that number to staff located anywhere in the world.

This means a customer in another country dials what looks and feels like a local number, but the call can be answered by a team based in a completely different location, using the same VoIP app or desk phone they already use for domestic calls.

Key characteristics of international VoIP numbers include:

  • Customers dial a local number in their own country, which tends to increase answer rates compared with an unfamiliar international dialling code
  • Calls are answered by staff regardless of physical location, often through the same softphone app used for other lines
  • No local office, local staff, or local carrier contract is required just to hold the number. Local numbers are typically available in [X – confirm coverage count] countries through our platforms
  • Numbers can usually be added or removed relatively quickly through an online admin portal

International VoIP vs Traditional International Phone Lines

Feature International VoIP Traditional Phone Line
Local overseas numbers Yes Usually No
Physical office required No Often Yes
Remote working Yes Limited
International call costs Lower Higher
Scalability High Moderate
Setup time Usually hours Days or weeks

What Are the Business Benefits?

Local Presence Without a Local Office

Businesses can appear local to customers in new markets by using a genuine local dialling code instead of a long international number, without the cost of renting office space or hiring staff before demand is proven.

Avoiding International Call Charges

Calls between offices, or to international numbers routed over VoIP, typically avoid the roaming charges and long-distance rates associated with traditional telephony, with international VoIP rates often a fraction of standard carrier pricing. since the call is carried as internet data rather than through international phone networks in the traditional sense.

Centralised Support Across Regions

A single support or sales team can answer numbers from multiple countries through one VoIP dashboard, rather than juggling separate phone systems, providers, and invoices for each region a business operates in.

Easier Market Testing

Businesses exploring a new country can test demand by adding a local number and seeing how many enquiries come in, before committing to a bigger investment like a local office or hires.

Who Benefits Most from International VoIP?

International VoIP is ideal for:

  • UK businesses expanding overseas
  • Companies with international customers
  • Remote and hybrid teams
  • International sales teams
  • Customer support centres
  • Businesses testing new overseas markets
  • Organisations with offices in multiple countries

In our own setups, the most common request is a UK business adding a second local number for one overseas market and routing it into the same call queue their UK team already answers.

Are There Any Limitations to Be Aware Of?

Some countries have specific regulations around virtual or international numbers: availability, required documentation, or restrictions on certain number ranges can vary, so it's worth checking with a provider before assuming a number is available everywhere.

Emergency calling (999, 911, and equivalents) is another important consideration: rules can differ depending on where a number is registered versus where the person using it is physically located, so this is worth clarifying directly with the provider rather than assuming.

Call quality still depends on the internet connection at both ends of the call, just as with any other VoIP call; a poor connection in either location can affect clarity, even if the number itself works fine.

Is Number Porting Possible for International VoIP?

In many cases, yes. Existing numbers can be ported into a VoIP system, though this depends on the country, the original carrier, and local regulations. Businesses expanding into a new market usually find it simpler to provision a brand-new local VoIP number rather than porting one in, since porting can involve more paperwork and longer lead times, particularly across borders.
